Cell Biologist (skin expert) (f/m/d) (Post-doc position)

At the IUF, several research groups are working on how environmental factors (ultraviolet radiation, air pollution, food chemicals) affect the physiology and pathophysiology of the skin and other barrier organs. We work primarily with cell cultures and mouse models and to a lesser extent with skin biopsies and 3D organotypic skin cultures. The scope of these complex 3D skin equivalents will now be extended and adapted to the questions of the IUF.

The core unit model development is offering a position for a Cell Biologist (skin expert) (f/m/d) (Post-doc position).

 

The position is to be filled at IUF as of September 1st, 2019.

 

YOUR TASK


Within the framework of a core facility:

 

  • Establishing a laboratory for the creation of complex 3D organotypic cultures or organoid cultures and expand the range of skin models already implemented at the IUF for a wide variety of applications;
  • Further development of these models and exploration of new areas of application including complementation with immune cells.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE


  • Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Biology, Physiology, Biochemistry, or related field;
  • Experience with cell culture, ex-vivo models, organoids and complex 3D cell culture models;
  • In depth understanding of skin physiology, cell types and co-culture systems;
  • Knowledge of microscopy, histology and immunohistochemistry are required;
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are required (English and German).

Cell Biologist (f/m/d) (Post-doc position)

The core unit model development is offering a position for a Cell Biologist (f/m/d) (Post-doc position). The position is to be filled at IUF as September 1st, 2019.

The project is focused on the potential risk of particles exposure:

1.) Development and validation of 3D lung culture systems for mechanistic and toxicological research;
2.) Identification of the molecular pathways underlying pathogenesis of human diseases induced by exposure to airborne xenobiotics;
3.) Generation of genetically engineered human cells by genome editing of newly identified key regulators;

The project aims to the understanding of the underlying mechanisms and their genetic susceptibility involved in the development of pulmonary disease associated with particle exposure. The candidate will work on improving various aspects of existing techniques as well as developing novel models for the investigation of pathogenic effects after air liquid interphase exposure to particles as well as on the generation of genetically modified human lung cells and organoids.

Qualifications

We seek a highly motivated candidate (f/m/d) with a strong background in cell biology. Experience in advanced in vitro culture systems combining different cell types is appreciated. Expertise in standard molecular biology techniques and cell culture is critical. Previous work with lung models is a plus. The candidate is required to have strong skills in English and German and proven abilities to publish at a high international level with at least one first author publication. Motivation to work independently and being responsible for the daily management of his/her research project in coordination with other members of the group is expected. The candidate will also be actively involved in the training and co-supervision of other group members and students.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES


  • The individual should apply significant expertise in cell biology, cell culture, and molecular biology-based techniques.
  • Participate in the development and qualification of assays. Independently analyze data and provide conclusions. Critically evaluate own and others results and offer insights based on process and product understanding to help solve problems.
  • Contribute to patents, regulatory documents or manuscript as required.
  • Read scientific and technical literature in order to bring new and improved procedures to the laboratory, and to broaden understanding of disciplines outside area of training. Utilizes all appropriate experimental design methods needed for work in area of specialization. Conduct literature searches and apply knowledge to the approaches taken.
  • Participate in scientific discussion with colleagues through informal and formal scientific seminars and meetings.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE


  • Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Biology, Physiology, Biochemistry, or related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience with cell culture, ex-vivo models, organoids is highly preferred.
  • In depth understanding of lung physiology, cell types and co-culture systems.
  • Demonstrated competency in immunohistochemistry, western blotting and DNA cloning.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Environmental Epidemiologist position (f/m/d) (Post-doc position)

At the IUF, several research groups are working on how environmental factors (ultraviolet radiation, air pollution, food chemicals) affect the physiology and pathophysiology of the different organs. The working group “Environmental epidemiology of lung, brain and skin aging” focuses on epidemiological aspects of air pollution-induced aging / chronic diseases of the lung, the brain and the skin. We are particularly interested in the complex interplay between these organs and in gene-environment interaction. Our studies are of global relevance and conducted not only in Germany, but also in other European as well as Asian countries.

The working group “Environmental epidemiology of lung, brain and skin aging” at the IUF - Leibniz Research Institute for Environmental Medicine in Düsseldorf is offering a Environmental Epidemiologist position (f/m/d) (Post-doc position). The position is to be filled at IUF as of April 1st, 2019.

YOUR TASK

The main duties will be performance of statistical analysis and interpretation of results, as well as presentation of these results at scientific conferences and meetings, and the writing of research papers and grant applications. The successful candidate (f/m/d) will be also responsible for the supervision of PhD- and master students and the organization of student practical courses.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE


  • Epidemiology, biostatistics, life sciences, medicine, public health, or equivalent;
  • Experience in epidemiological research in general and/or environmental epidemiology in particular;
  • In depth understanding of statistical analysis and profound hands-on experience in statistical analysis and epidemiological techniques as well as substantial experience in working with statistical software (SAS or R);
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are required (English and German).

Master student (f/m/d)

The IUF-LIMES liaison group “innate immunity and extrinsic skin aging” offers a position for a Master student (f/m/d).

The position is suitable for a master student in the field of life sciences (biology, toxicology, molecular biomedicine, biochemistry, or similar) who aims to prepare a master’s thesis on immunology of the skin.

You will work on a DFG-funded project dealing with the impact of UV irradiation on the immune response in non-infectious inflammatory skin disorders. Specifically, we are interested in the functions of the transcription factor HIF-1a within the epidermis in a context of allergic skin disease.

Tasks include conventional PCR, primary cell isolation and culture, flow cytometry, histology, qPCR, Western blot, ELISA and related skills. Experience in any of these methods and their analysis will be a benefit. You are curious for doing basic research and are able to work as a responsible team member.

Master Thesis position (f/m/d)

The working group “AHR and UVB-Signaling” at the IUF - Leibniz Research Institute for Environmental Medicine in Düsseldorf is offering a Master Thesis position (f/m/d).

Topic: Impact of aryl hydrocarbon receptor signaling on DNA damage-dependent cellular stress responses.

Our working group investigates the functional relevance of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) signaling pathway for DNA damage-induced stress responses, i.e. DNA repair and apoptosis, in human cells. In our previous work, we have shown that the AHR represses DNA repair and apoptosis in UV radiation-exposed epidermal keratinocytes and thereby critically contributes to skin photocarcinogenesis. In the advertised master project, the identified underlying signaling processes will be reproduced in other cell systems and characterized more deeply by applying various cell and molecular biological methods. The overall aim of the project is to identify target structures and respective compounds that might be suitable candidates for the treatment of certain malignancies. Tasks of the master student include the culture and treatment of human cells and cell-lines, quantitative gene expression analyses, SDS-PAGE/Western blot-based assessment of protein expression/phosphorylation, various apoptosis assays, and DNA damage detection and quantification.

We offer a very friendly and inspiring working atmosphere in an interdisciplinary team consisting of toxicologists, cell biologists and physicians. For this challenging project, we are searching a highly motivated master student of molecular biology, toxicology, molecular oncology or a related discipline with a keen interest in signal transduction, genotoxicity and cancer research. Ideally, the candidate (f/m/d) has first hands-on experience with cell cultures and standard molecular biological and protein biochemical techniques. Expertise in measuring cell death and/or DNA damage is a plus. We are looking for a goal-oriented team player with excellent communication skills in English. Starting date is February 2019.

Master Thesis position

The research group of Prof. Dr. Ellen Fritsche offers a Master Thesis position. Topic: 3D Bioprinting for Substance Development.

Toxicological screening is crucial for safety assessment of compounds, i.e. chemicals and pharmaceuticals. In line with the paradigm shift in toxicology, in vitro tests based on human cells are thought to be a predictive alternative to the apical animal testing that is currently still the gold standard for hazard assessment. To produce human cell-based neural in vitro systems for neurotoxicity testing is a challenge, especially due to the complexity of the human brain. One issue that needs tackling is the generation of neuronal networks for compound testing that can be produced stably and reproducibly in a relative short period of time in a multi-well format. The so far established networks using e.g. embryonic or induced pluripotent stem cells have a high variability and take a very long time to establish.

Therefore, in an interdisciplinary approach, the 3D bioprinting technology shall be used to fabricate hydrogel-based neuronal networks based on human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived neurons and glia cells for neurotoxicity in vitro testing. These organoid structures are thought to mimic human in vivo neuronal functions and are thus of interest for industrial medium-throughput applications.

For this challenging project, we seek for a highly motivated individual who has experience either with hydrogel preparation/characterization, stem cells, tissue engineering, 3D cell culture, or molecule crosslinking techniques. Ideally students of Biochemistry or Biomedical Engineering, or others with expertise in the mentioned research fields are welcome. Knowledge in Neurosciences, fluorescence imaging, IT affinity, and previous working experiences with cell cultures is a plus. We expect a team player with an outstanding commitment and fun at work. We offer an interdisciplinary and industrially funded project in Applied Science, an intensive on-the-job training, and a stimulating working atmosphere. Starting date is from December 2018.

Tierpfleger/innen der Fachrichtung Forschung und Klinik füttern die Tiere, halten ihre Käfige und Ställe rein, kümmern sich um die Fell- und Klauenpflege, dokumentieren die Zucht und protokollieren ihr Verhalten. Auch die Aufzucht von Jungtieren gehört zu ihren Aufgaben. In der Forschung wirken sie bei Experimenten, Tests sowie der Untersuchung und Auswertung von Zell- und Gewebeproben mit. Nach tierärztlicher Anweisung verabreichen Tierpfleger/innen Medikamente, betreuen die Tiere nach Operationen und beobachten ihren gesundheitlichen Zustand.
